So this my theory: I was out shooting pictures around the house and this guy was coming up very close; so my theory, just for fun, is that this was the same robin I photographed sitting on the rock out front in May, and that he likes getting his picture taken. He loves the camera.

I grabbed the camera and made a falling-out-of-the chair shot through window, screen and beer bottle.

It's not every night you see hundreds of lake gulls swirling around the top of a skyscraper.* The mini tripod I have on order -- along with remote shutter release -- would have allowed me to keep this shot in focus. So maybe next year I can make a better picture.

*Key Tower (I hope that's what we still call it) at 66 stories and 947 feet is Cleveland's tallest building.

I think I'll stop apologizing for trying to do lomography with a Nikon D70 because I've figured something out.

If you look at the shop on the main lomography Web site, you'll see all sorts of cameras and equipment: Fisheye, Colorsplash, Oktomat, Frogeye underwater camera, Elf Nightvision Device, and of course, the Lomo Kompakt Automat ... as lomography has evolved so has the equipment. So why not go all the way to the D70 and Adobe Photoshop? LINK

Besides, you can learn a lot about Photoshop by trying to make a thousand-dollar picture look like it was shot with a $29 camera. And I enjoy it. But stay tuned because Bill Lammers has purchased a real lomography camera and may soon be adding to this site.

In case you couldn't tell, that's Mark in the photo. I realize I am making these pictures look worse than the typical lomograph, but it's just a stage.

LOMO HISTORY LESSON

This is the legend of Lomo: Released in 1983 in the Communist-era Soviet Union, the Lomo Kompakt Automat (L-CA) was built for the large Russian population by the Leningradskoye Optiko Mechanichesckoye Obeyedinenie (LOMO) optics factory in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). Millions of L-CAs were sold -- its popularity was due to the camera's small size and sturdy design. But hardly a decade later the L-CA's attraction and production diminished as Soviet Communism began to dissipate and the proliferation of Japanese cameras flooded the market. It looked like the camera's time had come to drift off to obscurity and hide among thrift-store shelves.

This was not to be the case. Matthias Fiegl and Wolfgang Stranzinger, two Viennese art students, happened to be traveling in 1991 when they entered a thrift store in Prague and came upon a dusty L-CA. Deciding to purchase the cute black camera for fun, they began to take random shots of their life, not knowing how the film would develop. Surprisingly, the images displayed stunning colour and artistry unlike anything they had seen in other point and shoot cameras. They posted the photographs on their kitchen bulletin board (which they called a "LomoWall") and the Lomo movement was born.

OK, so it's taken me a few hours to figure this out, not counting the time I spent asleep, but I think we're all so used to seeing wonderfully composed, tack-sharp images and elaborate photo illustrations, that the lomographers are the only ones offering something fresh. Rough. Dirty. Profoundly gritty. Images that get our attention.

In other words, lomography is to photography what Neil Young and Crazy Horse are to music. It's garage-band photography.
